I Sang in Danish Tonight!

Some of you might know that every Monday we do choir at the folkhøjskole.  It might be my favorite night of the week for that reason.  Singing is something I love to do but never really did in a group. Thus far all of the songs we’ve done have been in English, so I’ve had no trouble at all.  Well tonight Rikke, the højskole’s principal and choir leader, pulled out a new song—in Danish.  Instead of faking it through the tune, I decided to take the challenge.  I’ve had several weeks now of Danish class, but I’m still working on my pronunciation.  The Danes have 15 vowels, and to make so many they have extra letters in the alphabet: Å å, Æ æ, and Ø ø.   I won’t even try to describe how to pronounce those here.  Anyway, what better opportunity to practice reading Danish quickly?  I gave it my best, and Rikke even complimented me on my Danish!  I responded with “Thank you—tak” and a big, bright smile.
