My Time in Tromsø
This is not the most ideal time to visit Tromsø. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the Norwegians take the Easter holiday very seriously. At the time I didn’t quite understand the extent of it. For the past two days, the city has nearly shut down. I’ve hardly been able to get food. Thankfully the kind man also staying here offered to share.
At least the museums are still open. I visited the Northern Norway Art Museum yesterday, which featured a rather abstract modern film exhibition as well as some more traditional paintings. I also visited Polaria, a part of the polar research institute here in Tromsø, which was a sort of small arctic aquarium. Today I went to the Tromsø University Museum, which had some exhibits on local wildlife and the Sami people. One thing I found incredible was that some birds here fly all the way to Eastern and Southern Africa during the winter, and one species flies all the way to Antarctica!
Tonight is going to be special. I’m going dogsledding! Yup, that’s right. It’s a half-hour ride with a couple hundred huskies, followed by a traditional dinner in a Sami tent. I know, I too can hardly believe I’m doing this. Dogsledding!
